After examining the text “Together at the Lord’s Table” sent to the Vatican by the German bishops on May 20, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) explains that the intercommunion practiced with Protestants “would open up new divisions in the ecumenical dialogue with the Orthodox Churches ”and that“ the close link between the Eucharist and the Church ”is too much ignored.

It is a new refusal that the German bishops have just received from the Vatican, following their request to be able to practice intercommunion between Catholics and Protestants.

On May 20, the German Bishops’ Conference (DBK) sent to the Vatican the text “Together at the Lord’s Table”, published by the Ecumenical Study Group of Protestant and Catholic Theologians (ÖAK) in September 2019. This text of 57 pages advocates “ reciprocal Eucharistic hospitality ” between Catholics and Protestants, on the basis of previous ecumenical agreements on the Eucharist and ministry.
